A graph-theoretic analysis of the Tree of Life as a 10-node, 22-edge directed acyclic knowledge network.
When Éliphas Lévi and S.L. MacGregor Mathers mapped the 22 Major Arcana to the 22 paths connecting the 10 Sephiroth of the Otz Chiim (Tree of Life), they created one of the earliest complex relational knowledge graphs in intellectual history. We analyze this topology using modern graph theory.
I. The Graph Invariants of the Otz Chiim
n mathematical terms, the traditional Kircher Tree of Life is a planar undirected graph $G = (V, E)$ comprising $|V| = 10$ vertices (the Sephiroth) and $|E| = 22$ edges (the Paths of Wisdom).
The vertices are partitioned into three vertical pillars: the Pillar of Severity (left / negative polarity), the Pillar of Mercy (right / positive polarity), and the Middle Pillar of Equilibrium (central synthesis). The 22 edges correspond bijectively to the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet (3 Mother letters, 7 Double letters, and 12 Simple letters).
II. Edge Routing and Tarot Hermeneutics
By placing each Tarot Trump on a specific edge, the Tarot card ceases to be an isolated icon and becomes a state-transition operator between two qualitative nodes.
For instance, The Tower (Path 27) does not exist in a vacuum: it is the direct horizontal edge connecting Netzach (Victory / Instinctual Passion) with Hod (Splendor / Analytical Intellect). The lightning strike of The Tower is the acute breakdown that occurs when raw passion crashes into rigid intellectual rationalization without middle-pillar mediation.
